Oby Nwofor, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader in Enugu State, has urged women to ensure the success of female candidates irrespective of party affiliations.

Nwofor made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

The woman leader said that women needed to support their own in the 2019 general elections to increase their number in decision making positions.

NAN reports that two women in the state chapter of the APC including the Special Adviser to the President on Judicial Reform Sector, Mrs Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu won nominations to contest the forthcoming general elections.

According to her, Ibekaku-Nwagwu’s impressive credentials and doggedness should be able to defeat the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu  and represent Enugu West Senatorial District in 2019.

She described the successes of Ibekaku-Nwagwu and other female aspirants on the platform of APC as “significant” in the just concluded party primaries, adding that the women wing of the party was proud of their performances.

“I want to commend all the women that participated in the primaries and would want to see a woman retire Ekweremadu after spending 16 years in the Red Chambers.

“We request every woman in the state to canvass support for female contestants irrespective of party affiliations for our voices to be heard.

“I strongly believe that Ibekaku-Nwagwu has the credentials to unseat the incumbent.

“I will continue to champion the course of every woman in the state irrespective of party affiliation,” she said.

On the divisions in the APC arising from the primaries, Nwafor called for unity in the party in the spirit of sportsmanship.

“We need to rally round all candidates of the party, including our governorship candidate, Chief Ayogu Eze as we cannot afford to approach the elections divided,” she said.

Nwafor further said that the women’s wing of the APC was fully committed to mobilising support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that the action was in appreciation of the president’s performances  beside the role of his wife, Hajiya Aisha,  in giving voice to women across the country.

“We need to give Mrs. Aisha Buhari the necessary support to succeed in her efforts to make the voice of the Nigerian woman heard,” Nwafor said. (NAN)
