The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has stressed the need for Nigerians to safeguarding the unity of the country, as the 2019 general elections draw near.

Dr Garba Abari, the agency’s director general, who with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, however, stressed the readiness of the country for the elections.

He said as part of the efforts to strengthening the unity of the country, the agency had started engaging relevant stakeholders through sensitisation campaigns across the six geopolitical zones.

According to him, the sensitisation became very necessary to change all the negative narratives flooding the media about impending social, political and religious division among Nigerians.

“We are flagging off robust sensitisation campaigns across the six geopolitical zones of the country to ensure that Nigerians remain focused on unity, as the 2019 elections draw closer.

“The South-south region sensitisation campaign was on Monday flagged off in Port Harcourt and we are set to replicate same in Owerri and other zones.

“We will bring together our traditional rulers, stakeholders, religious leaders, politicians, youths and the women groups to support free, fair and credible elections.

“We shall rekindle the true spirit of an indivisible Nigeria through our sensitisation campaigns,” he said.

Abari added that he had successfully brainstormed with relevant stakeholders and the civil society groups in the South-south states during the sensitisation programme in Port Harcourt.

The director general, therefore, urged Nigerians to cherish unity and contribute to sustainable peace in the country. (NAN)
