CIVIL Society Organisation has doubt about the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a credible poll in 2019. One Voice, the group, said it believed that with the present security apparatus skewed in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, it would be difficult for anybody to believe the next general election would be fair in the country.
The group in a statement signed by Adedeji Adeleye, chairman, One Voice Media Committee, said the meeting of some Southern and Middle-Belt leaders last month in Abuja calling for the replacement of the present INEC chairman as an indication that several Nigerians may have lost confidence in the ability of the commission to conduct a credible election.
“Since our elections are always a ‘do or die’ battle as winner takes all, the 2019 elections may likely experience massive rigging and the peoples’ vote may not conduct so much in the elections. Because INEC and the security agencies (as presently constituted) cannot midwife credible, free and fair election. Nigeria’s security architecture is highly skewed in favour of the ruling APC and largely compromised by partisan interest of the northern hegemonic Fulani oligarchy,” the group said.
To renew confidence in the mind of Nigerians that the government is prepared to conduct a credible poll, One Voice urged the federal government and security agents to end the continuous killing of innocent people in Plateau, Benue and other parts of the country by herdsmen.
INEC, the group said, has the responsibility of rebuilding the confidence of Nigerians ahead of 2019 elections in view of several threats by some groups to boycott the election if the country is not restructured before the election.
