AHEAD of the 2019 general elections, an NGO, Community Action for Popular Participation (CAPP) has presented Voter Education Manuel that would guide the conduct of elections.
The acting Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Nelson Ananze, said at the public presentation of the manual on Wednesday in Jos that the document was an updated version with current developments about elections.
He said the document explained election processes, particularly for electorate to be in the know of the Dos and Donts of election processes.
He added that “this document is very important because voter education is supposed to be a continuous process because from time to time people need to be enlightened about the process.
“It is also important because democracy is about elections and if people are not mobilised through voter education, then the aim is defeated.
“So, this manual will serve as eye opener for the electorate as it will also help them to elect credible persons as their representatives.”
Mr Steve Aluko, a Public Affairs Commentator, lauded the initiative, saying the manual would be of great benefit to both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and states’ electoral bodies.
He said the document would not only educate and inform the public, but would add value to the country’s electoral process.
“`This document is coming at the right time, unlike the previous ones that comes on the eve of elections.
“This will empower the people to properly engage in the electoral process and promote good governance and ensure violence free elections in the country.
“It will also act as a resource material that will mobilise, organise and actively engage the people in the electoral process.”
Aluko added that the launched document would reduce political apathy among the people, as it would widen their understanding about political engagements.
Mr Bulus Dabit, the Plateau Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) pledged the agency’s commitment toward ensuring that the document reached every nook and cranny of Plateau and beyond.
The manual is the brainchild of the Strengthening Citizen’s Engagement in Electoral Processes (SCEEP) project, supported by Actionaid Nigeria, BBC Media Action and Ukaid. (NAN)
