MR. Edward Ogba, the President Movement for Nigeria’s Transformation (MNT), an NGO on Tuesday cautioned politicians against all forms of ”toxic” campaigns in order not overheat the polity.
Ogba gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the formal commencement of political campaigns in Abuja.
He called on politicians to focus their campaigns on pertinent national issues as insecurity, economy, corruption and national unity than campaigns of calumny.
“Presidential candidate and their allies, campaign teams should make their campaigns issue based as several challenges begging for attention in the country.
“Such as insecurity, non- performing economy, poor basic infrastructure and even the fundamental problem of restructuring among others,” he advised.
The MNT boss who restated the determination of the group to promote good governance in the country, urged political gladiators to jettison mudslinging and stereotyping.
He explained that the campaign period should be a time to reexamine the Nigerian problems with a view to addressing them and never time for rancorous distractions.
Ogba therefore called on political parties and their candidates especially those seeking Presidential office to play by the rule having the protection of Nigeria as a priority.
According to him, the observation so far made reveals that the conduct of some politicians appear to be derailing from rule of decency.
He reiterated the resolve of the group to collaborate with Nigerians in the leadership recruitment process.
“We are consulting with the Presidential candidate aimed at assessing their capacity to know who can truly lead the country to the promise land.”
Ogba however expressed optimism that the country would come out stronger and better in future.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the presidential and National Assembly campaigns begin on Wednesday, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable and will run through Feb. 23, 2023, while the elections proper hold Feb. 25, 2023.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council postponed the start of its campaigns earlier slated for Wednesday.
The Director-General, of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong disclosed this in a statement Tuesday.
According to him, the adjustment of the timetable and schedule of activities is in order to accommodate growing interests showing by various political tendencies in being party of the campaign council.
According to him, a new date for the kick-off would be announced soon.
