COMET Football Club on Monday bounced back from their first group match loss to beat APM Terminals 3-0 in the ongoing 2024 Ships and Ports Maritime Cup in Lagos.

The match had both teams working hard to break each other down in the first half, but none of them could find the net.

The second half saw a more positive power play from both teams as Comet looked sharper upfront and recorded good number of scoring chances.

The goals came pouring late into the game as Comet striker, Ronaldo Martins was able to connect with a through pass and beat the APM Terminals goalkeeper in the 73rd minute.

Martins was the supplier of the second goal as he crossed the ball from the right wing for Emeka Sylvester to nod into the net in the 82nd minute.

APM Terminals, realising their situation, became aggressive and went on the strong foot but all their efforts were repelled by a more determined Comet side.

Comet scored their third goal in the 89th minute of the game through Richard Onyema, who nodded the ball swung in from a corner kick.

Gbenga Popoola the Head Coach of Comet Football Club told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his team’s victory over APM Terminals Football Club was well deserved.

“We played well today and could have scored more goals; we did everything necessary to get our goals and we achieved that in the second half.

“It was a well contested game and we were very fortunate to convert some of our scoring chances, which was key to our victory.

“Having lost our first game, we came out  determined today and we just have to keep the momentum and ensure we win our last game in the group phase,”Popoola said.

APM Terminals Head Coach, Government Ayakpo told NAN that his team lost to a better side and would go back to the drawing board, to win their last game.

“It’s a sad loss, we played well but lost several scoring chances that if well taken would have counted for us,” Ayakpo said.

NAN reports that Comet will play Nigeria Customs while APM Terminals meet NSC in their last Group B encounter.

In other matches decided on Monday, ENL Consortium walloped ABTL 4-0 as NIWA walked over Nigeria Navy, with 3-0 recorded for them (NAN)
