A 22-year-old man, Ayomide Fawehinmi, was on Monday, arrested over an attempt to abduct a teenage boy at Empire area of Surulere, Lagos.
The suspect who was almost lynched by an angry mob when he was first sighted with the victim was rescued by policemen from Surulere Police Station.
The suspect had allegedly lured the 15-year-old boy from Empire and was taking him to an unknown destination before he was nabbed by residents of the place.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspect was rescued and thereafter arrested after a distress call was received from members of the community about the mob action.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect lured a 15-year-old boy from his mother’s shop and was taking him to an unknown destination before he was accosted by a neighbour who raised the alarm.
“The suspect had already dispossessed the boy of an Itel android phone to cut off communication with his mother.
“While the boy has been rescued unhurt and the phone recovered, an investigation is ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s culpability. The suspect will be arraigned contingent on the outcome of the investigation,” he said
In the same vein, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, commended residents for always promptly alerting the authorities to suspicious movements.
He, however, warned against jungle justice, saying it is a crime.
