28-year-old man bags 2 years for peddling 1kg of Hemp

A 28-year-old, Sunday Eze, is to spend two years in prison for hemp trafficking, a Federal High Court pronounced in Lagos on Thursday.
Eze was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a charge of trafficking in Hemp also known as Cannabis Sativa.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
In his plea, the convict had begged the court for mercy and leniency in its judgment.
After his plea was taken, the facts of the case was reviewed by the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, who tendered the following exhibits: a certificate of test analysis, packaging of substance form and the bulk of drug exhibit.
Others are arequest for scientific aid form, and the statement of the convict taken in English language.
Aernan also tendered a drug analysis form and a large sealed envelope containing remnants of the restricted substance.
The court admitted the exhibits and marked them accordingly.
According to the prosecution, the convict was arrested on March 23 at Dankito Street in Surulere, Lagos.
It said that 1kg of Hemp was recovered from the convict and was later charged to court.
According to the NDLEA, Hemp is a restricted narcotics similar to Cocaine and Heroin LSD, which are all restricted by law.
The offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The prosecutor urged the court to convict Eze based on his plea and evidences adduced.
Justice Chuka Obiozor found the trafficker guilty of the offence as charged.
“The court accordingly, convicts and sentences you to two years imprisonment, beginning from the date of your arrest,’’ he said.
