FOUR out of the six proposed new art theatres that the Lagos State Government planned to build in the six divisions are 75 per cent completed.
Bolanle Austen-Peters, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Terra Kulture Arena and the contractor handling the projects said this on Wednesday in Lagos.
Austen-Peters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the theatres located at Epe, Badagry, Igando and Ikeja would be ready for inauguration by October.
The art practitioner got the contract for the construction of the theatres in 2017.
According to her, the theatres at Epe, Badagry, Igando and Ikeja will be ready for inauguration in October while the remaining two at Ikorodu and Lagos Island will be ready at a later date.
She said that the initiative for the construction of the 500-seater theatres would solve the nation’s unemployment problem and also put smiles on the faces of artistically talented-youths.
“The theatres will feature as theatre centres as well as multipurpose cultural centres equipped with art galleries, restaurants, and skill acquisition centres.
“They will provide the appropriate ambiance for Nigerians and foreigners alike to experience Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage,’’ Austen-Peters said.
She added that prices of services to be provided by the theatres would be subsidised for users; such that they could use their facilities for artistic rehearsals, performances and exhibitions among others.
She said: “We just happen to be the midwife for the purpose, the intention is to create employment opportunities and spaces where performing/visual artistes, artisans, poets and all can perform.
“These pockets of spaces in the theatres will be subsidised by the Lagos State Government when operational for them to be accessible and affordable for the less privileged.
“Each of the theatre will be equipped with modern equipment which will always be at their disposal.
“So, Nigerian artistes should get set to explore the creative economy in arts, music, culture and entertainment generally,” she said.
NAN reports that the only existing art theatre in Lagos is the National Art Theatre built by the Federal Government in 1977 for FESTAC 77 activities and is located in Iganmu area of the state. (NAN)
