The Chief Judge of Kaduna State, Justice Muhammadu Bello on Monday said a total of 41,307 cases were filed in the out gone 2018 to 2019 legal year.
Bello disclosed this at a ceremony to mark the beginning of the new 2019 to 2020 legal year in Kaduna.
He said that 26,802 of the cases had been disposed of.
According to him, 6,950 out of the 15,446 of the cases before the High Court were treated, while 2,543 cases out of 4,083 before the magistrate courts were disposed of.
He explained that the Sharia Court of Appeal had treated 42 cases out of 181 before it.
“There were a total number of 13,775 cases before the various Sharia courts and 11, 355 cases were disposed of, the chief judge said.
Bello stated that the Customary Court of Appeal also disposed of 102 cases out of 161 cases, while 5, 810 cases out of 11, 347 were disposed of by various customary courts in the state.
The CJ, urged the government to continue to give prompt attention to the demands of the judiciary which is the last hope for the common man, the uncommon man and the society.
He also urged various courts to continue to work hard with the aim of building public confidence, promoting efficient management and speedy dispensation of justice in courts.
“We have carried out various construction/renovation/furnishing works in the judiciary.
” The 2 High court building in Zaria(Dogarawa and GRA), the ADR building and some court rooms and officers at the headquarters had been renovated/refurnished.
“A Magistrate court and a ware house are in the process of being constructed in Kabalan Doki, new Magistrate court in Maigana, Soba Local Government is about to be furnished and be put to use,” he stated.
Bello further stated that in a bid to decongest prison, there is a continuous monthly prison visit in Kaduna and quarterly prison visits in Zaria and Kafachan Judicial Divisions.
“Inmates on minor offences were discharged, some were released on bail and awaiting trial prisoners now spend shorter time detention before trial.
The CJ further admonished judiciary workers to continue with the commitment, discipline and hard work in order to make judiciary the best not only in Kaduna State but also in the country.
NAN reports that 38,336 cases were filed in all courts of the state in the 2017 to 2018 legal year.
NAN also reports that during that legal year, 3,254 out of the 9,679 of the cases before the High Court were treated, while 1,730 cases out of 3,300 before the magistrate courts were disposed of.
Also the Sharia Court of Appeal had concluded 2,890 cases out of 3,421 before it. (NAN)
