FIVE teenagers, who allegedly breached public peace by attacking some residents of Lagos Island with dangerous weapons, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused– Ogidan Jabbar, 16; Sultan Galubi, 18; Adekoya Micheal, 18; Akinjagunla Mubarak, 19, and Ibrahim Ahmed, 19– are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and possession of dangerous weapons.
Police prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the offences with other people still at large on May 21, at Enuowa Street on Lagos Island.
Emuerhi said the accused armed themselves with cutlasses and some other dangerous weapons and were chasing innocent citizens.
“The accused were brandishing cutlasses, broken bottles and axes to scare and harass people going about their lawful businesses.
“Some miscreants used the opportunity to rob some traders and inflicted injuries on them,’’’ he said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 45, 168 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 45 stipulates three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, in her ruling granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N20, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Sule-Amzat said one of the sureties should own a house in Lagos State while the other surety should be a blood relation of the accused.
She added that the sureties should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
The chief magistrate adjourned the case until July 26 for trial.
