57-year-old surety docked for failure to produce suspect

A 57-year-old man, Thomas Oghenede, was on Friday, arraigned in an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun for failure to produce a suspect for whom he stood surety.
Oghenede is facing a two-count charge of perverting justice and fraud for standing surety for one Uche Portia & Thomas Godspower.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Risikat Olayemi, granted him bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The magistrate said Oghenede must swear to an affidavit of means, own land within the court’s jurisdiction and have a verifiable address.
She also asked him to produce two recent passport photographs to the court.
The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept 8, around 4p.m. at the office of Nigeria Police Area Commander at Moore area of Ile-Ife.
Osanyintuyi said Oghenede conspired to commit felony with intent to pervert justice by standing surety for one Uche Portia & Thomas Godspower with a recognisance bond to forfeit five million naira.
He added that Oghenede standing surety for the suspect caused him to escape in a case of obtaining money under false pretence.
According to him, the offences contravened sections the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defence counsel, Mr Ben Adirieje, pleaded that Oghenede be granted bail in most the liberal terms and promised that he would not jump bail. The case was adjourned until Nov. 11 for hearing. (NAN)
