A humanitarian group, The Generation for Societal Change (GSC), has called for rededication to and promotion of national values as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

This is contained in a statement signed by Okechukwu Nworah, the group’s Global Coordinator and made available in Abuja on Monday.

Nworah said that such values include discipline, integrity, patriotism, dignity of labour, self-reliance, social justice and religious tolerance.

“These values are what define us as a great nation. They are more or less the spring from which our individual and collective actions, thoughts, mindsets, beliefs, culture and tradition as a people should source from.

“In the journey towards realising the Nigeria we all desire, embracing these values wholeheartedly is the first step we need to take,” Nworah said.

He stated that these values should be allowed to inform the choices of leaders both at the forthcoming elections and subsequent ones.

“If the leaders we follow do not align with the values we profess as a nation, our journey towards being the nation we truly desire, will be prolonged and more frustrating,” the coordinator added.

Nworah urged that Nigerians to strive to live and choose as leaders, only those who are willing to lead by values.

He said that ensuring that the younger generation of Nigerians including the unborn, are influenced from early age of development by these values was the way to go.

Nworah also urged Nigerians, both at home and abroad to join hands and promote these national core values by living and promoting them daily, adding,”they should choose to vote for values when the time comes.

”The Nigeria we all desire is one without distinctions of tribalism or ethnicity, without interference of religion, social status, undertones of human avarice and innate selfishness.” (NAN)
