84.2% residents incure catastrophic out-of-pocket expenses in Kaduna State – Official

THE Kaduna State Contributory Health Insurance Authority (KADCHMA) says 84.2 per cent of residents in the state incur heavy out of pocket expenses for healthcare services.

Malam Abubakar Hassan, the Director-General, KADCHMA, disclosed this during a two-day engagement workshop with Media Managers and KADCHMA at Zaria on Wednesday.

Hassan said that one of the goals of the scheme was to ensure that healthcare expenses did not lead to poverty and stop people from doing other social needs.

He said the health account survey conducted by KADCHMA for 2017 to 2021 indicated the imperative of people pulling resources under the scheme access quality healthcare at an affordable rate.

He noted that the agenda of Gov. Uba Sani was to use the scheme as vehicle for reducing poverty through a robust enrolment into the scheme, hence the workshop with media managers.

Malam Saidu Bala, the Head, Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Procurement of KADCHMA, said Health Account Study was a tool through which country monitors the flaw of money in health system.

He added that Health Account traces how resources were mobilised and managed; what health goods and services were consumed and who provides them, among others.

“It further provides policy makers with information such as the overall resources enveloped in the sector.

“The maiden health account study conducted in the state indicated that 88.2 per cent observed catastrophic out pocket expenses in 2017.

“It was 86.2 per cent in 2018, 85.3 per cent in 2019, 83.1 per cent in 2020 and 84.2 per cent in 2021,” he said.

Hajiya Asmau Halilu, Chairman Nigerian Union Journalist s (NUJ) Kaduna State Council restated the commitment of the union to encourage to enrol into the scheme.

He noted that the union had a robust interaction with the Director-General of the scheme to enrol journalist into the scheme for better chance to educate the public on its gains. (NAN)
