THE Management of Global Upfront Newspapers has confirmed the release of Madu Onuorah, its publisher and Editor-in-Chief, who was abducted from his Abuja residence by the Nigerian Police on Wednesday.

The management said in a statement that Onuorah was released late on Thursday night by the Enugu State Police Command, which requested the Ebonyi Police Command to abduct him for them.

According to the statement, the management shall take further actions on the matter after it has received fully briefing by Onuorah and their lawyers.

The Global Upfront Newspapers also declared solid support for Onuorah and insists the police station is not a court of law where alleged defamation cases are tried.

It also thanked the Journalism and Media family, friends and well-wishers, and all defenders of freedom of expression who rose against budding tyranny.

According to reports, the Police had arrested Onuorah without showing any arrest warrant and without disclosing his offence.

It will be recalled that the incident happened when about 10 fully-armed policemen stormed his residence in Lugbe, Abuja, in two Sienna buses on Wednesday, May 22 around 6pm.

Madu was whisked away in the presence of his wife and children, who fruitlessly demanded from the Police why they were arresting the head of their family.

The Police have seized Onuorah’s phones, thereby completely cutting him off from communication with people, including his family members.
