THE Deputy Governor of Abia, Mr Ikechukwu Emetu, has commiserated with victims of the fire that gutted the Afia Nkwo Market, Ohafia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire, which occurred on Thursday, destroyed goods and property, worth millions of naira.

In a statement issued in Umuahia and made available to NAN on Tuesday, Emetu promised to liaise with the State Fire Officer to ensure the immediate installation of firefighting equipment in Ohafia Local Government.

He stated that taking such a proactive measure would help to prevent a recurrence of a similar disaster in the future.

The deputy governor cautioned the people to guard against indiscriminate bush burning during the dry season.

He emphasised the importance of taking preventive measures to mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks.

He also announced plan to constitute a committee to examine the extent of the damage in order to be able to take appropriate action.

Emetu also promised to visit the affected market to assess the extent of the damage. (NAN)
