GOV. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the gully erosion that cut off communities in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state.
Ikpeazu made the call on Thursday while inspecting the gully erosion site in Ugwuabaa-Mgbelu Umunnekwu community in the council area.
The governor said that it was pertinent for the federal government to expedite action in execution of erosion control measures in the area adding that the sites posed a huge risk to the community.
“I passed through this road a few weeks ago and I used this particular channel. It is unfortunate that the road is completely gone and the community is separated.
“It is unfortunate and it is so bad that vehicles can plunge into the gully. You can see that the gully is up to 15 metres deep. That should not be taken for granted. We are going to do a few things as palliative.
“The level of devastation created by the erosion is beyond what Abia Government can handle. We are going to draw the attention of the Ecological Funds Office to it immediately, “he said.
Ikpeazu added that the state government would create a diversion on both sides of the erosion site, which would begin from 200 meters away from the site to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Earlier, Chief Aham Uko, Commissioner for Environment stressed the need to institute a long term measure which would provide a lasting solution to the environmental challenge.
Uko said that construction designs for erosion control in the area had been done adding that the state government would fast track the transmission of the designs to World Bank for necessary support since the government had paid its counterpart fund. (NAN)
