ABU International Studies Alumni Association aims to boost scholarship

…holds 1st AGM on Sept. 14

THE International Studies Alumni Association, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria is to hold its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, September 14, 2024 in Zaria with series of activities to boost literary works and academic excellence.

The AGM tagged: “Home Coming” will feature a public lecture titled: “ECOWAS and the Challenges of Regional Integration in Africa“. 

The lecture will be delivered by Ambassador (Prof.) Abdullahi Shehu, the Pioneer Director-General of the ECOWAS Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

Professor Shehu, who is also an alumnus of the International Studies Programme at ABU, Zaria, was the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to the Russian Federation with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Belarus.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Association’s Interim Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abdullahi Shuaibu on Monday in Zaria.

Shuaibu stated the one-day event will be chaired by the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr. Chris J. Maiyaki, also a member of the association.

Other dignitaries that will grace the occasion included the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, who is the Special Guest of Honour and the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as the Royal Father of the Day.

The ABU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kabir Bala is the Chief Host.

Other events slated at the homecoming event will include books presentation aimed at enhancing knowledge and the availability of literary works in Nigerian universities.

A general elections to elect new leadership for the association will climax the one-day event.

The Association PRO noted that the Interim President, Ambassador Muntari Abdu Kaita has called on all graduates of the International Studies Programme to attend the AGM.

Kaita emphasized the importance of the participation and attendance, in order to give back to their Alma Mater and contribute to the growth and development of the country.

The president also thanked the members and other highly placed Nigerians for supporting the association and the hosting of its first annual general meeting.

The ABU International Studies Alumni Association is an organisation of graduates of the International Studies degree programme of the university.

It was established in October, 2021 to enhance cooperation and camaraderie among all graduates of international studies programme, the Department of Political Science and International Studies, its lecturers and the university community.

It provides a platform for interaction and an avenue for mentoring and assistance to the students and lecturers of the Department of Political Science and International Studies as well as promoting the growth and development of the university.

It further seeks to foster cooperation and interactions between the alumnus, the university, the department of political science and international studies, lecturers and students to promote scholarship and excellence in academics, national and international affairs.

The Association comprised of seasoned diplomats, renowned academicians, public administrators, ex-ministers, diplomatic journalists, and key players in the public and private sectors.
