ACTIONAID Nigeria (AAN), an NGO, has called for community sponsorship from Nigerians to address the needs of vulnerable people and contribute to their welfare.

Mrs. Ene Obi, the Country Director of AAN, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Obi urged Nigerians not to leave sponsorship of the vulnerable in the society only to foreign countries, saying that contributions from Nigerians would go a long way in tackling so many problems affecting their lives.

According to her, Nigerians should be able to contribute a quota of their monthly salaries to help fellow Nigerians to come out of poverty.

“For a very long time, when I joined ActionAid, we tried to stress that if other people are contributing to Nigeria, Nigerians should be able to contribute to Nigerians and for Nigerian children

“And so we started calling for monthly subscriptions like N2, 000 a month because during our work in the community, we realized that the N2, 000 can change a life.

“It can really contribute because, for some children, they don’t need more than N10, 000 in a term, so we are now inviting Nigerians to contribute to Nigerians.

“We are currently engaging other media organizations to work in that area of community sponsorship, looking at individuals in Nigeria.’’

Obi said that the organization in a bid to incorporate other corporate organizations into the gesture introduced payroll giving.

“It is a huge environment we want to launch. If we can go into institutions and allow institutions to also do payroll giving, we will make a huge success.

“ There is payroll giving which has attracted a number of corporate organizations and they are now doing individual giving.

“Some people say that they cannot give N2, 000, so some people gave us N5, 000, some people N50, 000 a month and they are contributing to it.

“Our books are open; we maintain transparency and accountability, which is the core of our organization’s hallmark and so we are audited every year by our auditor.

“So we do that to make sure we are on balance and we are also updated by ActionAid international,’’ she said.

She, therefore, encouraged Nigerians to key into the project as it would help reduce the level of poverty in the country. (NAN)
