WURAOLA Olayiwola scored twice in the first half for Adewale Babes Women Football Club to win the SKODA/IFC Women’s Football League on Wednesday in Ibadan.
They defeated the Oluyole Flaming Queens 2-1 at the Olubadan Stadium to win the second edition of the competition, wiping away memories of last year’s loss to the Queens.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final match had Hawawu Hassan scoring the lone goal for the Oluyole Flaming Queens who won the competition’s maiden edition in 2023.
Both sides had clashed in the opening match of the competition, fully known as the Sherifat Kola-Daisi/Ibadan Football Council Women’s Football League, with the Flaming Queens winning 3-1.
Earlier at the venue, Apex Angels had finished third in the competition after defeating Lagelu Notable SS 1-0 through Islamiyat Yusuf’s goal.
Speaking after the final match, Olajide Olorunsogo, the coach of Adewale Babes, said it was a relief for him they were winning this time after last year’s loss in the final.
Olorunsogo said their success was however because his players were in top form this year.
“We’ve played in three finals of different competitions, and we won all. My players tried their best, and I’m impressed by their performance.
“My players are very young and in secondary schools, and only two of them are in the higher institution.
”I prepared them well and informed them that those they’re playing against comprises of those playing in the league and they had to prepare their mind and play a matured game.
“Their opponents were more mature and experienced,” he said.
On his part however, Femi Okikiola, the coach of Oluyole Flaming Queens, was however full of sour grapes after their defeat.
He said they were not meant to play against the Adewale Babes in the final match, claiming they were supposed to meet in the second match of the competition’s fixtures.
“They claimed because they went to play in an under-15 competition somewhere the fixtures had to be changed, and the first fixtures that were previously circulated were no longer used.
“If we had played our second game against them, then they wouldn’t have made it to the final. This, I am very sure of,” Okikiola argued.
NAN reports that the winners got N200,000 for their efforts, while the second-placed side received N150,000 and the third-placed team got N75,000.
For the competition’s individual awards, Omolola Azeez emerged the best goalkeeper and received N10,000.
The event’s Most Valuable Player was Wura Olayiwola and she got N20,000, while the highest goal scorer was Tobiloba Oladeji with six goals and she got N10,000.(NAN)
