A deputy minister for the Ministry of Economy on Wednesday, said the Afghan caretaker government would support and enhance national revenues if foreign countries halt aid to the war-ravaged country.

Abdul Latif Nazari, deputy minister of economy, was quoted by the local media outlet Tolonews as saying: “we have to enhance national revenues through domestic potential to manage the economic development of Afghanistan, in case some countries cut their aid.’’

The official made the remarks in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s order on Monday wherein he paused his government’s foreign aid for 90 days on the grounds of assessment of efficiencies and consistency with his foreign policy.

Local economic observer Siar Qurishi believes that a halt in foreign aid would hurt the economic condition of Afghanistan, where some 23 million people require humanitarian assistance.

According to Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, an aid agency supporting Afghans the 90-day aid suspension would have “disastrous consequences” on the poor people of Afghanistan. (www.nannews.ng) (Xinhua/NAN)
