Nigerian actors and actresses shine at the 2014 Africa Magic Award night in Lagos

IT WAS all smiles for some Nigerian actors and actresses who won various awards at the recently concluded second edition of the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCA.  The event held on, Saturday, March 8, at the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The award night was filled with glamour and glitz, as Nollywood and Ghollywood stars and legends graced the event.

Pete Edochie, a legendary actor, emerged one of the big winners on that night.  He received the Industry Merit Award which came with a Hyundai SUV car for his contribution towards the growth of the film sector in Africa. Michelle Bello, producer of the award-winning movie, ‘Flower Girl’, also emerged a big winner on that night as she also walked away with a brand new Hyundai SUV car while Rita Dominic won the Best New Era Award which came with a trip to Dubai.

Other Nollywood stars who won big at the event were Funke Akindele, who won the Best Actress in Comedy, Nse Ikpe-Etim got the Best Actress in Drama award for her role in “Journey To Self’, Osita Iheme walked home with the Best Actor in Comedy award for his role in ‘The Hero’ while Desmond Elliot won the Best Supporting Actor in Drama award for his role in ‘Finding Mercy’. Elvis Chucks got the Best actor award in Comedy and Obi Emelonye, the Best Sound Editor award. Mercy Aigbe also won the Best Indigenous Language Yoruba award among others.

However, the star attraction of the night was Kenya’s film, ‘Nairobi Half Life’ which won four of the five awards. Kenyan actors and Ghanaian ace-producer, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, won three awards for the movie, ‘Contract.’ Bikiye Graham-Douglas also won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award for her role in ‘Flower Girl’. The award night, however, ended with the impressive KAKADU ensemble brought the ceremony to an end as the guests were leaving the hall.

The first edition of AMVCA was held last year and it had the likes of O.C Ukeje, Mercy Johnson, Tunde Kelani and other notable movie stars as winners in different award categories. Meanwhile, Biola Alabi, managing director of M-net Africa, organiser of the event, said at a press conference after the event, that the essence of organsing the award was to celebrate African film makers as well as promote their works. The award night was also held in association with MultiChoice Africa and Amstel Malta.
