THE European Union imposed sanctions on six people involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling in Libya, the Council of the European Union said on Thursday in a press release.

“On June14, the Council transposed into EU law sanctions adopted by the United Nations on June 7.

“It imposed a travel ban and an asset freeze on six human traffickers and smugglers operating in Libya, four of Libyan nationality and two of Eritrean nationality,’’ it said.

The council noted that those people were leading figures in human trafficking and migrant smuggling activities in and around Libya.

The aforementioned individuals were also sanctioned recently by a UN Security Council panel for their role in these illegal activities.

The sanctions were part of a broader international effort to seek accountability for those involved in human trafficking in the country.

The measures marked the first designations through Libya’s Sanctions Committee since 2011. (Sputnik/NAN)
