SENATOR George Weah has all but won Tuesday’s run-off vote to become Liberia’s next President, according to provisional results just released by the National Elections Commission NEC.
According to NEC, with more than 98.1% of the votes processed Weah, a former footballer got more than 61 percent while candidate Joseph Boakai, outgoing Vice President received under 38.6 percent of the votes.
The unprocessed ballots will not significantly alter the results, meaning that barring any unforeseen circumstances Weah will be sworn in as Liberia’s 24th elected president on Jananury 16, 2018, ending a prolonged political process involving the first round ballot of October 10, which produced no clear winner but resulted in a legal battle at the Supreme Court.
Turn out was 56 percent or 1.9 million of total registered voters.
