Africans Rising Movement of the Year

AFTER collecting 6,512 votes, Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Dignity is announcing the winners of its 2020 Activism Awards. The award initiative is an international platform for highlighting African grassroots movements and activists working for positive change for Africans on the continent and in the diaspora.

Asha Jaffar is the 2020 Africans Rising Activist of the Year. Jaffar is a Kenyan journalist and activist born and raised in Kibera. She is currently managing Kibra Food Drive, an initiative she started to provide food for communities in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a winner of the award, Jaffar says she hopes she is setting an example of how to redefine activism for Africans.

“I feel like for the first time we are looking at activism on a different angle and not just on a political angle,” said Jaffar in a video statement. “If you look at me personally, I did not wait on the government or anyone to come and rescue my community. I took the initiative to start a project that would help my own community.”

Tournons La Page is the 2020 Africans Rising Movement of the Year. The organization works across 10 countries on the African continent to promote democracy and defend human rights.

Among many of its actions, Tournons La Page has supported the observation of the December 2020 elections in Niger, strategic litigation for corruption scandals in Guinea, and strategic litigation in the case of the murder of a human rights defender in the DRC.

“This award is a reward, it is a motivation for us to continue the work we have undertaken since the creation of our organization,” said Marc Ona Essangui, president of Tournons La Page, in a video statement.
