THE Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has described appointment of Miss Orire Agbaje, a 400-level student, in the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform as a win-win for Nigerian students and youths.

Mr Joe Ejiofor, Deputy Registrar, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, in reaction to the recent appointment of Agbaje by President Bola Tinubu.

NAN reports  that Agbaje, a 400-level student of the University of Ibadan (UI), is the president of Nigeria Universities Tax Club and holds an Association of Accounting Technicians qualification.

The Committee, inaugurated on Tuesday by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, comprised of tax experts and key private sector stakeholders who were  saddled with the responsibility of harmonising taxes in the country to boost revenue.

Ejiofor said: “This is sign that power may soon change to the youths who, over time, have been clamouring to be given a space in the government.

“I read somewhere that Orire is not only a student of Economics but also the President of the Nigerian Universities Tax Club.

“You can see that she is not a greenhorn, so she is bringing to the committee some form of experience. So, for those or any who searched her for the president must have seen something uniquely good about her.

“This is motivational; a message to other students and youths out there to keep being good ambassadors. You never can tell who is watching, I believe we have more Agbajes out there,” he added.

Also, Mr Adeolu Ogunbanjo, National Deputy Chairman, Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), told NAN that he was impressed with President Tinubu for the involvement of a youth in national matters.

Ogunbanjo said it was an indication that President Tinubu meant well for the Nigerian youth and urged Agbaje to represent the interest of  youths and students well, as she wears the two caps.

“I’m impressed that even as small as the committee is, President Tinubu deemed it fit to get involved with a youth, that’s a youth participation in his government, I must say that it’s quiet commendable.

“For our dear President to pick a youth who is still in the University and about to graduate, it’s really encouraging at that level of youthfulness and an indication that he means well for the Nigerian youth.

“Congratulations to the young lady, expectations are high, she’s therefore expected to represent both constituency, (youth and students) well in the committee,” he added.

The NAPTAN official also noted that the appointment was a good one for the institution she was coming from.

He described it as a recognition and urged the management to accord Agbaje necessary support needed in the task.

According to him, she needs all the assistance because it is a national assignment.

“So, UI should be able to give her all the encouragement that she needs to deliver this national assignment.

“It’s a national assignment she’s going for, so, the university must support her to make sure that her education does not suffer, even if it means giving her exemption for the period”.

He enjoined members of the Committee to be focused, very forthright and practise due diligence. (NAN)
