OBI Aguocha, representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South federal constituency, recently visited Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, at the Department of State Security, DSS, custody.
This visit came after Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers reached out to Aguocha regarding their difficulties in accessing their client. Aguocha swiftly intervened, writing to the DSS and the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, seeking their immediate assistance.
During the meeting, Aguocha learned that the delay in accessing Kanu was due to his lawyers’ request for the judge to recuse herself, which requires further legal process.
Aguocha then met with Kanu, accompanied by Kanu’s family member, Ezioma Stella Ikpo, and briefed him on the circumstances. A resolution was reached, granting Kanu’s legal team access to their client.
Aguocha expressed gratitude to the DSS’s new leadership for ensuring Kanu’s healthcare needs are met, including access to private medical care and his chosen doctor. Kanu reportedly received private medical attention as recently as October 3, 2024.
Aguocha also commended the Speaker for his quick intervention, facilitating these positive outcomes.
Aguocha emphasized the importance of upholding Kanu’s fundamental human rights, as guaranteed under the 1999 Nigerian constitution and United Nations instruments.
He acknowledged the concerns of Kanu’s legal team and appreciated their professionalism. Aguocha remains optimistic about achieving a political solution, leading to Kanu’s release and promoting peace and stability in the South East.
This development follows Aguocha’s earlier efforts to secure Kanu’s release, including seeking support from former President Muhammadu Buhari. Aguocha visited Buhari at his country home in Daura, Katsina State, apologizing for Kanu’s past actions and seeking Buhari’s intervention. Buhari welcomed Aguocha’s approach and assured him of his support for a political solution.
