TROOPS of the Nigerian Air Force have killed five bandits in the Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State and rescued two women and a child earlier abducted by the gunmen.
Our correspondent learnt that the bandits had attacked Hayin Mahe and Hayin Kanawa villages in Gusau before the intervention of the military.
According to the air force on Monday, the troops of the Operation Diran Mikiya had the gun battle with the bandits on Sunday after intelligence reports that the bandits were hiding in Sububu and Kagara forests.
It was gathered that while five bandits were killed, others fled with gunshot injuries while three AK-47 rifles were recovered in the process.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the two freed women and child had been handed over to the district head of Mada town in the area.
Daramola said, “A NAF Special Forces team operating in Zamfara repelled attacks by bandits to invade Hayin Mahe and Hayin Kanawa villages. The operation, which took place on Sunday, was conducted following intelligence reports indicating that the bandits, who were operating from Sububu and Kagara forests, had attacked the villages and kidnapped some residents.
“The timely response of the team resulted in a gun duel with the bandits who eventually fled into the forest. The personnel pursued the bandits and neutralised five of them. Some villagers who were kidnapped by the bandits, including two women and a child, were freed and handed over to the district head of Mada Town.
“In a follow-up operation, the team returned, supported by a NAF Alpha Jet and attack helicopters, and tracked the fleeing bandits to their hideouts within Sububu Forest. The Alpha Jet successfully attacked the bandits’ camps while the helicopters scanned the environs for fleeing elements.” – Punch
