WIFE of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has applauded the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for its impressive control of food and drugs.

Mrs Buhari gave the commendation at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday while speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of NAFDAC.

She said that the establishment of NAFDAC helped to significantly reduce Nigeria’s disease burden arising from counterfeit medicines and food contamination.

The president’s wife further said that NAFDAC’s operational efficiency had reduced the issues of poor quality of packaged water, corrosive cosmetics, and other unhealthy practices.

According to her, the agency has played a key role toward the realisation of the healthcare objectives of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

She added that it had made outstanding contributions to the promotion of the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises as the drivers of the economic growth of Nigeria.

Mrs Buhari stated that NAFDAC has actively participated in the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse.

According to her, NAFDAC has led the fight for the eradication of micro-nutrient deficiencies, which is the vision behind her Future Assured Programme.

“I salute the efforts of the agency; I pray that it will continue to grow stronger and stronger.

“I foresee a NAFDAC in the next 25 years that will attain world class status in food and drug administration,” she said.

She praised a former director general of the agency, the late Prof. Dora Akunyele, for her hard work and incorruptible disposition, which she said, earned the agency a reputable name.

She prayed Almighty God to grant her soul eternal repose.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that high point of the event was the conferment on Mrs Buhari, of a Diamond Award of Excellence for her modest contribution to the fight against drug abuse and malnutrition in Nigeria. (NAN)
