Akwa Ibom assembly urges re-opening of Ibom plaza
LEGISLATION
THE Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the State Government to direct relevant ministries and agencies to renovate and re-open the Ibom Plaza for public use.
The resolution was sequel to adoption of a motion by Mr Uwemedimo Asuquo (PDP-Uyo SConstituency) on Thursday at plenary.
Mr Asuquo Nana (PDP-Ikono Constituency) supported the motion, saying that the plaza located at the state capital was constructed with the state-of-the-art facility for business and recreational purposes during former Gov. Victor Attah’s administration.
He said he was displeased that since 2012, about 600 shops and stalls at the plaza had been abandoned which caused the people to resort to road side trading within the plaza and its environs.
“The abandonment of this facility which serves as a recreational and tourist centre where people within and outside the state used to visit, relax and do business has cost the state losses in internally generated revenue,” he said.
He added that the facility could have been attached to the hospitality and tourism sector.
The Speaker, Mr Udeme Otong directed the clerk of the House, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the resolution to Gov. Umo Eno, for action.
Meanwhile, the House had adjourned plenary until Sept. 21. (NAN)
