AKWA Ibom Government says it will strengthen its collaboration with Federal Fire Service in combating fire incidents and protecting lives as well as public and private assets in the state.

Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, stated this when the Zonal Commandant, Federal Fire Service, Mr Edoho Udom, paid him a courtesy visit in Uyo on Wednesday.

Ibanga commended the service for its timely intervention and collaboration with the State Fire Service in cases of fire outbreak in the state.

“Gov. Umo Eno is very concerned about safety and he’s taking it seriously to ensure that lives and property are secured in the state,” he said.

He advised the service to work out a robust programme in partnership with the state ministry of information and also have a help line for emergency purposes.

The commissioner assured the zonal commandant that he would draw the attention of the state governor to the need for visiting the service’s headquarters in order to attract assistance to the zonal office in Uyo.

Earlier, the zonal commandant said he was with the commissioner to solicit for more equipment to enable the organisation combat fire whenever the need arose.

Udom, who is in charge of Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, said that the work of the service was to complement efforts of the state fire service, as one fire station would not be enough to contend fire incidents.

He sought for commissioner’s assistance in securing the utility vehicle promised by the immediate past administration in the state.

Udom called for the stationing of a safety officer in the Government House in case of any fire emergency.

He commended Ibanga for always being present at fire scenes to monitor the firefighters and assist where necessary.

The zonal commandant also stressed the need for more fire stations in any particular town and recommended at least, five fire stations within the state capital.

Though he noted that fire outbreaks had been put under control in the state, he called for sensitisation of citizens on fire prevention measures. (NAN)
