THE President of All Stars Football Club of Abeokuta, Waheed Lawal, has donated a set of jerseys and two sets of training bibs to Gateway United FC Abeokuta.
All Stars’ Media Manager, Abdulrasheed Adelakun, in a statement on Monday in Abeokuta said Lawal while making the donation urged Ogun indigenes and stakeholders to support the club.
Adelakun said Lawal presented the items to the Acting General Manager of Gateway United, Niyi Soleye, in Abeokuta.
“The club has spent over a decade in the lower division, and this is because of inadequate funding.
“All hands must therefore be on deck for the team to get promoted to the elite league.
“Gateway United is the darling team of all Ogun indigenes and as stakeholders, we must show commitment and support anyway and anyhow we can,” Lawal was quoted as saying.
He also said the club needed the support of everybody to be able to continue to survive at this critical moment in the history of its existence.
“We must ensure that the state government provides adequate funding and club managers must be alive to their responsibilities while the coaches and players should discharge their duties accordingly.”
Lawal, who disagreed with the opinion that Gateway United be disbanded by the state government if they were unable to fund it, said the club should be seen as an investment.
He advised that government only needed to invest heavily in the club and ensure that the right people were at the helm of affairs to enable the club to succeed.
“We will resist and protest against it. The club is created to empower and develop the talents of our youths.
“Many other states like Oyo, Kano, Ekiti and Rivers own clubs and are funding them accordingly. So, why not our state?” the club president was quoted as saying.
