A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a 23-year old labourer, Mathew Oche be remanded in a correction centre for alleged armed robbery.

The police charged Oche, who lives in Ekile, Ado Local Government Area of Benue with criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

However, the Magistrate, Mrs Roseline Iyorshe, did not take his plea for want in jurisdiction.

Iyorshe adjourned the matter until Dec 6 for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Godwin Ato told the court that the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarter, Igumale in Ado Local Government Area to the State CID, Makurdi on Nov 14, 2022 via a letter dated Nov 13, 2022.

Ato said Mr Malachi Okorom of Hausa Quarters, Utonkom had reported at the police station on Nov 7 that he was attacked while heading to the Ekile market.

The police said Okorom recognised the attackers to be the defendant and one Uba, whose surname is unknown.

The police alleged that the suspects stole N250,000 from the complainant after knocking him unconcious.

Ato said the defendant was arrested and during police investigation, he confessed to committing the offence.

The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 6(b) and 1(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004.(NAN)
