–
GOVERNOR Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has been named as the guest speaker at the sixth Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, annual lecture series for 2016. According to the programme of events released by the organising committee for this year’s programme, the annual lecture series is part of the FRSC’s strategies for creating public awareness on issues of road safety.
The sixth annual lecture series is expected to hold on Tuesday, April 5, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja at 10.30hrs. The theme of the lecture is: “State Road Traffic Management Efforts: The LASTMA Experience.”
According to Bisi Kazeem, head, media relations and strategy, the FRSC annual lecture series which was initiated in October 2009, is in pursuant of the United Nations’ call for global action to stem the tide of road traffic crashes and the impact of the menace on the socio-economic conditions of the people of the world, particularly the third world countries. Being the lead agency for road safety management and administration in the country, it said, the FRSC keyed into the programme as a veritable mechanism for actualising the goals of public awareness creation on issues of road safety.
“Since its inception, the Lecture series had been addressed by such eminent personalities as the Former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Ayaoku who was the guest speaker at the maiden edition held in October 2009 on the theme, “The Capital Waste on Nigeria Road,” it noted.
Other notable speakers at the annual programme includes, Prince Michael of Kent, who chaired the second edition in 2010 with Kiran Kuma Kapila, chairman, International Road Federation, IRF, speaking on “Decade of Action For Road Safety: The imperatives for Developing Economies.” Richard Tay, a don at the La Trobe University, Melbourne, Austria had his turn in 2011 when he spoke at the third edition of the programme on the theme: “Achieving the Decade of Action On Road Safety: 2011-2020,” while Neil Schuster of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administration delivered the fourth edition of the lecture series in 2012 on the theme: “Safe and Sustainable Transport Lessons for Nigeria.”
The programme further stated that John Dramani Mahama, president of the Republic of Ghana, delivered the fifth edition of the lecture in 2014 on the theme, “Safer Roads: A 21ST Century Development Challenge,” in February 2014.
“This year’s edition, being the sixth in the series is with the theme: “Partnering with States in Road Safety Administration,” the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode is speaking to us on the topic: “State Road Traffic Management: The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Experience,” it stated
