FOR the second time this year, Ahmed Kuru, managing director/chief executive officer, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, has emerged winner of CEO of The Year at the 13th edition of the Excellence Recognition Awards organised in Lagos annually by Global Excellence magazine.
Earlier in January Kuru was also honoured at Ikeja Sheraton, Lagos as winner of African Best Rated CEO of The Year at the second edition of the National Development Forum, NDF/award ceremony organised by African Development Magazine, an international news publication.
The latest award according to the organisers was in appreciation of the boldness, doggedness and contribution of the AMCON boss to go after some of the most difficult debtors in the history of Nigeria and ensure they repay their debts, which would help to ease the hardship the economy is faced with presently. According to them, Kuru was adjudged winner by the panel of judges after a careful evaluation of the difficult assignment he does at AMCON and the fact that he goes about it without fear or favour.
“The assignment of recovering money in a country like ours from business heavy weights and those that are politically exposed is not an easy job. But we are impressed that the AMCON CEO practically puts his life on the line to recover these debts, which entailed chasing dangerous debtors that have borrowed money from tax payers to fund their businesses and lavish lifestyle while deliberately refusing to pay back,” the statement said.
In his acceptance speech Kuru who eulogised the management and staff of Global Excellence magazine for initiating and sustaining the award in the past 13 years said it was heart-warming that somebody somewhere recognised the good work the AMCON was doing for the country. He, therefore, called on all Nigerians to support the AMCON in its quest to recover the huge debts that a few individuals owe the country. Kuru was represented at the ceremony by Jude Nwauzor, head of corporate communications at the AMCON.
Other winners at the event included Access Bank Plc, which emerged as Best Bank of the Year; Nnamdi Okonkwo of Fidelity Bank Plc was named the Best Bank MD of the Year; Amen Estate, Ajah, Lagos won as Real Estate of the Year and SIFAX Group, also emerged as Company of the Year.
