Anambra assembly summons officials over alleged killing by anti-tout squad

THE Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned various officials including the Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, the leadership of the Anti-touting Squad Onitsha Zone, Special Advisers to the Governor on Market and Security, and the Chairman of Bridge Head Market, Onitsha to address speculations surrounding the killing of one Mr. Arinze Obunadike by members of the Anti-touting outfit and Market Security at Bridge Head Market, Onitsha.

The motion was moved under matter of urgent public importance by the member representing Ihiala II Constituency, Mr Golden Iloh. 

He noted that  Mr. Obunadike, a resident of Iyiowa in Ogbaru Council Area and a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who was an apprentice at Bridge Head Market Onitsha, was reportedly killed on February 16, 2024. 

Iloh emphasized the need for an investigation to dispel tension and ensure accountability.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Ogbaru I constituency, Mr. Noble Igwe, expressed sorrow over the incident and stressed the urgency of addressing issues within the Anti-touting operations. 

Similarly, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Mr. Augustine Ike and his Onitsha South I counterpart, Mr. Fredrick Ezenwa condemned the incident as unnecessary.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze called for the summoned officials to appear before the House Committee on Homeland and Boundary Matters on February 22, to provide clarity on the matter.

In a similar development, a bill for a law to establish the health facility monitoring and accreditation agency 2024 and a bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of touting and related activities in all sectors in Anambra State passed the second reading.

The bills were sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House,  Ikenna Ofodeme.
