THE Anambra State Government has started a holistic clampdown on illegal toll collectors in the state at the markets and on the roads.

A joint Task Force led by the Commissioner for Transport, Afam Mbanefo, and his Trade and Commerce counterpart, Uchenna Okafor, with ATMA, Ocha brigade, and other security agencies, raided some flash points in Onitsha and Amansea.

In an interview shortly after the exercise, Mbanefo noted that the illegal revenue collectors have not only milked commercial drivers dry with its negative effects on the Anambra state economy, but have also started collecting money from passengers, especially those using the services of tri-cycles.

According to him, all these activities have continued to cause traffic jams, reducing the number of traders coming into Anambra, especially Onitsha Main Market, with its negative effects on social life in Anambra.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Gov. Obiano’s administration toward fighting illegal revenue agents on the roads.

The team arrested illegal revenue collectors at Upper Iweka, Niger Bridge Head, Main Market and Amansea area of Awka.
