Anambra State Government celebrated Global Menstrual Hygiene Day, GMHD, recently in some community secondary schools in Idemili South and Nnewi North Local Government Areas, LGAs, of Anambra.
The celebration was in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, European Union, EU, and Anambra State government.
The event, which was marked globally on May 28, was, however, celebrated in Anambra secondary schools between June 6 to June 7.
Menstrual Hygiene Day, MHD, was set aside to sensitise people through the media and other platforms create a strong voice for women and break the silence about menstrual hygiene management.
MHD offered an opportunity to actively advocate for the integration of menstrual hygiene management into global, national, local, school policies and programmes.
Anambra State Hygiene Education Officer, Anambra State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, Rose Amasiani said that eight community secondary schools were selected to pilot the GMHD celebration in Anambra State.
The schools from Idemili South, LGA, are Community Secondary School, CSS, Akwukwu; CSS Nnobi, CSS Nnokwa and Unity Secondary School, Nnokwa.
The schools from Nnewi North, LGA are Technical Secondary School, Otolo Nnewi; Akaboezem CSS, Uruagu; Nnewichi CSS, Nnewi and Girls’ Secondary School, Uruagu.
“We started MHD celebration with a phone-in educational programme on May 28 at Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Radio.
“On May 29, we were live on ABS Television advocating and answering questions on menstrual hygiene and its management,’’ Amasiani said.
Daniel Iroegbu, executive director, Global Health Foundation, noted that the essence of MHD was to enlighten women and girls on menstruation in a hygienic and dignified manner.
“Menstrual management is awareness, articulation and confidence to manage menstruation with safety and dignity, using hygienic materials.
“It includes having access to water and soap for bathing and proper disposal of used menstrual absorbents,’’ Iroegbu said.
Victor Ezekwo, programme manager, RUWASSA Anambra State, urged the students to feel free to discuss and seek assistance about menstruation.
“No girl should stay away from school during menstruation or be disallowed to participate in any school function. A proper hygiene is all that matters,’’ he said.
MHM instructional materials, booklets, charts and fliers were presented to school teachers, MHM ambassadors and champions.
