THE government has announced the departure of two remarkable Anambra indigenes, Igwe Alex Nwokedi and Chief Morocco Maduka, an outstanding musician.

But rather than mourn their deaths, the state is celebrating the two personages, according to the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba, because `their achievements are enduring their lives worth celebrating’’.

The state government said in a statement in Awka on Tuesday, Oct. 2, that Igwe Nwokedi was not just the traditional ruler of the Achalla community in Awka North Local Government Area, but also a former Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council as well as Chairman of the Nine Eastern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council.

“He had earlier served exceedingly well’’ recalls the statement, “as the General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and Chief Press Secretary to General Olusegun Obasanjo, when the latter was the military Head of State from 1976 to 1979; he is still considered by many Nigerians to be the best press secretary to serve any Nigerian leader.’’

Adinuba notes: “Nwokedi’s ascendancy to the throne of his ancestors in a rural community inspired a generation of highly accomplished professionals in various endeavours to aspire to lead their communities, no matter the level of development.

“For instance, the current chairman of the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, excelled in his studies at the University of Stanford and Columbia University in the United States of America and was on the board of Shell International in London, when he decided to relocate to Onitsha to become the traditional ruler.

“The recently deceased Eze 11 of Ndikelionwu in Orumba North Local Government Area, Professor Vincent Chukwuemeka Ike, winner of the Nigeria’s highest honour for artistic and intellectual achievement, a revered novelist, an administrator and former registrar of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, belonged to the esteemed league of Anambra State’s storied royal fathers.

“Professor Laz Ekwueme, who also holds the Nigerian National Order of Merit, NNOM, sits on the throne of his fathers in Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area.

“His Royal Highness Igwe Prof. Onuora Nwuneli, a distinguished mass communications scholar, is today the Igwe Malume 1 of Igbakwu in Ayamelum Local Government Area.

“The traditional ruler of Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area, Dr. Cyril Enweze, a brilliant economist, was the number three man in the African Development Bank, AfDB, when he left to become the traditional ruler of his community.’’

Adinuba also extolled the accomplishments of Chief Maduka, who began as a village minstrel singer, but ended up as a celebrated highlife musician.

“Morocco’’, he quoted Governor Willie Obiano as saying, “represents the typical Anambra person: an infectious determination to not only succeed, but also excel in any chosen field, regardless of the humble beginnings’’.

Maduka recorded some 120 albums.

According to Adinuba, Igwe Alex Nwokedi, who will be buried in his hometown on Nov. 13, and Morocco Maduka, whose burial arrangements will be announced soon by the family, are worthy Anambra indigenes, whose achievements speak volumes.

“They are, therefore, already in the Hall of Fame of Ndi Anambra.’’
