IN the bid to maintain clean and healthy environment, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Obi Nwankwo on Friday, July 12, flagged-off the Environmental Action Campaigns tagged “Dobe Anambra Ocha’’.
The Ministry of Environment in conjunction with Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) and officials of OCHA Brigade took the campaigns round Awka, as they distributed fliers and enlightenment materials to the members of the public.
The commissioner said the campaign was aimed at sensitising Ndi Anambra on the importance of keeping the environment clean, noting that they would later take the campaigns to Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia.
“We want everybody to key into this, because maintenance of clean environment is a collective responsibility and we must always remember that cleanliness is necessary for healthy living.
“Everybody should have dustbins and then ensure wastes are bagged and refuse properly disposed of only at designated places for onward evacuation by the relevant authorities,’’ he said.
The commissioner stressed the need to shun open defecation and dumping of refuse in drainage channels, noting that operators of petrol stations and supermarkets should provide public conveniences for customers.
He also said that government had established courts that would prosecute defaulters of the sanitation laws and enjoined the Ndi Anambra to imbibe the virtues of proper waste disposal.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Emmanuel Okafor, emphasised the importance of sanitation exercise, scheduled to hold every last Saturdays of the month.
Okolo added that everybody should take active part in the exercise.
He admonished people to cut grasses and trim flowers in their premises as well as ensure that their surroundings were neat and free from odour.
A trader at the Eke Awka Market, Ngozi Chinwuba, commended the efforts of the government for the campaign for clean and healthy environment, noting that everybody should have waste bins in his/her shop.
Chukwunonso Imo, a bus driver, praised the exercise, saying that bus and tricycle drivers should have dustbins in their vehicles to avoid throwing out refuse from moving vehicles.
