Chief drivers and mechanical officers in Anambra State civil service held six months conversion course in Awka.

The course was held at the office of the head of Service, HOS, Staff Training Centre, Awka.

Declaring open the course, Harry Uduh, the HOS, explained that the mandatory course would enhance their performance and create opportunity for their promotion to the next level.

Uduh said that their resource persons were carefully selected to handle strategic skills they would add to their knowledge.

While commending them for the significant role they play in ensuring effective service delivery, Uduh urged them to put into practice, the knowledge and skills imparted in them during the training.

Nwando Obiano, the director, Training in the Office of the Head of Service, explained that the course would facilitate their upgrade from their present level seven to the next grade level.

According the Nwando, before now, they stop at level seven until their retirement age.

“But by virtue of the six months training, they can move to another level and that they can get uo to level 14.’’

As part of the course, they would learn English language, electrical and mechanical functions, drifting, correspondence and many other courses.

”They must score 75 per cent in attendance and a pass mark of at least 45 per cent in examination to qualify them for promotion,” she added.

Reacting, Daniel Echezona, one of the drivers who also doubled as chairman, Anambra State Co-ordinating Council of Technical Workers’ Association, ANSCCTWA, commended the state government for approving the programme.

Echezona said the course was among requests they presented to government for approval.

Some other requests are course allowance uniformity between them and staff of local governments and review of monthly allowances and overtime as well as life insurance policy for drivers.

Echezona while referring to the head of service as being drivers’-friendly, pleaded that approval of their requests would help to improve their welfare in line with what is obtainable in other states.
