The Anambra State government said it will continue to prioritise the welfare of Ndi Anambra by offering them affordable health services.

Governor Willie Obiano said this in Awka, while inaugurating the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, ASHIA. The Health Insurance Agency was established through Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme Law 2016 with a mandate of giving every citizen access to quality healthcare at reduced cost. Obiano described the plan as a visionary policy tailored toward transforming the health sector in the state.

The governor explained that the state government has paid for 10,000 persons to benefit from the scheme, while 10 per cent counterpart funding for civil servants in the state would also be settled.

Joe Akabuike, the Anambra State commissioner for Health, noted that the programme would promote easy access to healthcare.

Simeon Onyemaechi, executive secretary, the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, stressed that the scheme would help the government in achieving universal health coverage.

Ilochi Okafor, chairman of the Governing Council of the scheme, and Dozie Okpalaugo, the SSA to the governor on Health Insurance, said the creation of the agency indicated government’s readiness to expose Ndi Anambra to affordable Medicare.

Nnamdi Okafor, chairman, Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Health, noted that the scheme would boost the development of the health sector of the economy.

C Don Adinuba, the commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, commended Obiano for placing premium on health. “Under the present administration, Anambra has set up excellent polices for others to emulate,” Adinuba said.

Nnia Nwodo, the national president of Ohaneze Ndigbo, thanked the state government on steps taken in transforming the state’s health sector.

The event featured the unveiling of the plaque of the Health Agency and enrolment of Gov. Obiano in the scheme.
