GOVERNOR Willie Obiano has called on federal government to complete payment of compensation to Anambra State farmers affected by the 2012 flooding in the state.

Obiano made the call while receiving a delegation of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, at the EXCO Chambers, Government House, Awka.

The governor said it was regrettable that the devastation affected many families and distorted economic growth of the state.

“Federal government paid some people; so we call on them to complete the payment to enable the farmers to invest more in Agriculture,” Obiano said.

He challenged NEMA to be proactive in mitigating disasters to save lives.

Brandon Ibarakumo, the leader of the delegation and South East Zonal Coordinator, NEMA, said that the agency had commenced assessment of flood-prone areas in Anambra State.

Ibarakumo noted that the assessment tour would help in identifying the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, centres created to mitigate the impact of expected flooding.

Ibarakumo explained that the visit was to map out various ways to sensitise residents on safety measures to survive anticipated flooding.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET, NEMA and Hydrology experts had four months ago predicted the likelihood of flooding in some parts of Anambra state within the current raining season.

Paul Odenigbo, executive secretary, Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, stressed that 28 IDP camps had been established across eight Local Government Areas as part of measures to mitigate impending flooding.
