ANAMBRA State Government will soon give out 1,000 shuttle buses to commercial motorcycle operators, affected by recent ban.
The planned ban on commercial motorcycle operation will take effect from July 1 in Nnewi and Greater Onitsha.
The shuttle buses would be given out based on terms and conditions stipulated by the Anambra Small Business Agency, ASBA.
Uchenna Okafor, commissioner for transport, stated this in a meeting with the Motorcycle Union Stakeholders in his office at Awka.
Addressing the stakeholders, the commissioner declared that only those identified by the ministry as true commercial motorcycle operators in the affected areas would be qualified for bus scheme.
He added that the scheme covers indigenes and non indigenes in the state, who are commercial motorcycle operators in the affected areas.
The commissioner informed them that a week training programme would be organised for them by Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIOs, and Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, anchored by the ministry of transport before they ply the state roads.
He enjoined them to see the ban as an uplift from motorcycle owners to bus owners.
In a remark, Afam Okeke, chairman, Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria, Anambra State branch, appealed to the state government to increase the number of the buses, pointing out that they have no fewer than 10,000 registered members in two affected cities – Greater Onitsha and Nnewi.
He, then, commended government for its benevolence toward the dejected motor cycle riders.
Present at the meeting include Tony Nweke, acting director of Information, Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, Ben Isaac, O/C SIB ANS, Ogbo Chukwuma, NPF (Nigeria Police), AIO Awka Metro.
