AFAM Mbanefo, Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, says the state has potential to export more vegetables because the enabling environment exists to support trading in the sector.
The commissioner stated this when Pumpkin Growers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, PUGMAN, paid him courtesy visit in his office in Awka.
“Government has provided three cooling trucks for vegetable haulage, sensitised vegetable farmers and developed linkages with off takers in order to support vegetable activities in the state.’’
Mbanefo added that Tuber Conditioning Centre for yam export had also been established.
He noted that the ministry had been organising training in agronomic practices, so as to meet international standards.
The commissioner re-assured that he would designate a desk officer for pumpkin and vegetable cultivation for better collaboration with the team.
Uche Ihuagba, national president, PUGMAN, commended the state for taking the lead in vegetable production in the country and for collaborating with them.
He thanked government for promoting organic fertiliser production and supporting farmers to grow crops organically.
