ANAMBRA State Ministry of Health has inaugurated 15-man Committee on Eye Care Programme, the first of its kind in Nigeria.
The inauguration was performed by Joe Akabuike, Anambra State commissioner for health, in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
Akabuike said the exercise was in line with the Federal Government directive to form committees on Eye Care Programme to alleviate problems associated with the eye.
“The sole aim of this inauguration is for the state to undertake 250 cataract surgeries,’’ he said.
The health commissioner assured the committee of state government’s support to achieve its mandate.
He noted that the committee in the course of carrying out its duties would ensure that all International Eye Care Days and other National care activities would be celebrated in the state.
The terms of reference of the committee include carrying out awareness campaigns on blindness prevention, at least once a year; in collaboration with all relevant bodies to carry out eye care activities in the state.
“It will act as the advisory body to the state government’’.
Others are to, act as a clearing house for all eye care interventions in the state; to regularly inform the state ministry of health of any case of quackery with regards to eye care services in the state and to give written reports of its activities to the ministry of health quarterly and regularly.
Prof. S N Nwosu, an adjunct professor of Ophthalmology, a member of the committee, thanked the ministry for choosing him and others to carry out this humanitarian job.
He pledged that with the support of government, the committee would achieve more by working hard to ensure that the downtrodden in the state, the target for the programme would be best served.
The members of the committee include Director Public Health, Uchechukwu Onyejimbe (chairman), Obiageli Uchebo, Chizoba Obiano, Anthonia Udeja and Anthonia Akunne.
