THE Anambra State Government has signed a $1.1 million contract on waste recycling with Redivivus Industries Ltd. The contract is for the establishment of plastic recycling plant and management of other waste materials in Anambra State.
The project with an investment portfolio of about $1 million would make use of existing UNDP site at Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
During the ceremony at Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, Gov. Willie Obiano, said that the partnership would help in clearing waste materials that litter the streets and drainages in the state, especially after rainfall.
Obiano praised the engagement of waste scavengers by the firm to generate plastics and other materials that could be recycled.
He, however, urged the State Ministry of Environment to organise the sector properly by introducing a pilot scheme that would help households and offices to separate their wastes efficiently for easy recycling.
The governor stressed that the scheme if properly supervised would rid the state of waste materials in the next two years.
The Managing Director, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), Jide Ikeakor, explained that the project would generate wealth in the economy by creating not less than 50 direct jobs and improve the state’s IGR by making waste management profitable.
The Managing Director of the firm, Emeka Ajekwu, said that it would bring innovation into the management of wastes through the recycling of plastic waste and other materials.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Environment, Mike Okonkwo, said the move would help in solving the menace of plastic wastes in Anambra as well as bring social and economic benefits to the people.
