ANAMBRA State government is planning to name strategic streets after South Eastern states’ capitals as a means of fostering unity among the Igbo race.

  1. Don Adinuba, Anambra State Information and Public Enlightenment commissioner, disclosed this while addressing newsmen during a tour of the newly renamed Abakaliki Street in Awka.

“The move became necessary to give Igbo speaking states a sense of belonging.

“A new layout will soon be mapped out in Awka where the capitals of south eastern states will be named.  A neat place that meets International standards and of course showing Igbo unity,” Adinuba said.

He described the new Abakaliki Street sited behind St. Joseph’s The Worker Chaplaincy, by Parktonian Hotels, off Enugu-Onitsha expressway as befitting enough to be named after the capital of Ebonyi State.

“There was a place named Abakaliki street, which we found was not elegant enough for the capital of an important South Eastern State, like Ebonyi, with whom the people and government of Anambra have over the decades had excellent relationship.

“As you can see, the new Abakaliki Street is one of the major roads not just street in Awka. It has a major hotel like Parktonian and sited off the Enugu-Onitsha highway.

“There is no basis of comparison between the old and new Abakaliki street,” Adinuba stressed.

He noted that it was regrettable that some politicians, who misunderstood the state government’s action wanted to make political gains by over flogging the issue.

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State had during a recent South East governor’s meeting in Enugu acknowledged that a minor communication gap was responsible for the misunderstanding.

The commissioner was accompanied on the tour by Gov. Willie Obiano’s media aides, Ifunanya Abbas and Nzeribe Uzordimma.
