THE Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Vincent Okpala, says that the state will partner with the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, to accredit General Hospitals in the state.
Receiving the State Coordinator, NHIS who led her team to pay him a visit at his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, Okpala assured them that his ministry would enter into the partnership in order to ensure that the state General Hospitals received all the requirements needed for the accreditation.
The commissioner commended the team for the roles they play in saving the lives of Nigerians through the NHIS.
According to him, Gov. Willie Obiano’s administration does not joke about the things that concern health in the state, that is the reason we are doing well with our Health Insurance; Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, ASHIA.
“It is a welcome development that more General Hospitals in the state will be fully accredited under the NHIS for the benefits of our people,’’ Okpala said.
The State Coordinator, National Health Insurance, Chinyere Aniebo, said that the visit was to seek the collaboration of the commissioner in getting General Hospitals in the state accredited under the NHIS.
“We have discussed with him to see how General hospitals will be accredited because on their own they couldn’t take that decision, so that is why we are here.
“What I did was to show the merits of the accreditation to the commissioner and he was happy about it.
“You know we have Federal Civil Servants in the state already on NHIS platform, they enrolled because they needed hospitals they can access care from,’’ Aniebo explained.
According to her, there are only a few private hospitals, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University Teaching Hospital, Onitsha General Hospital, Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital that are accredited under the NHIS.
“We found out that the majority of the enrollees go to these hospitals, so they have an overload of work to do.
“If we get more General hospitals to accredit the enrollees. They can choose them and they will receive better care because the number will not be overwhelming for the hospitals to handle,’’ she said.
