Anambra State government has expressed a determination towards reviving football competitions in schools in the state.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra made this known during a state executive council meeting held at the EXCO Chambers, Government House, Awka.

Obiano had received children from Premier Primary School, Aguleri, for their excellent performance during a recent Channels Kiddy’s Football Competition held in Lagos.

The children represented Anambra State in the Under-13 Children Football Tournament in Lagos, organised by Channels Television.

The tournament was held from May 20 to May 27 at which the Anambra team was knocked out at the quarter finals stages.

The Anambra team was taking part in the tournament for the first time since the founding of the tournament by Lagos-based Channels Television.

Obiano emphasised the need to rekindle the spirit of sporting competition among schools in the state.

In a bid to motivate the children, he presented N100,000 to each of the 23 players and N200,000 each to the coach, team manager, the team doctor, technical adviser and Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB.

He also stressed the need to provide them with brand new jerseys, football boots and other basic training facilities to encourage and enhance their effective performance.

Tony Oli, chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, explained that team emerged as winners in schools’ competition in the state to win the right to represent Anambra at the tournament.

Oli explained that their loss at the quarter finals was because of what he referred as ‘controversial officiating.’

According to him, the states’ sports commission just newly created in Anambra will sustain the tempo and reintroduce different sports programmes in the state.
